16:9 Aspect Ratio Calculator

Type any width and the matching 16:9 height appears straight away — or the other way around. The calculator opens on 16:9, with the standard widescreen resolutions listed below it.

Standard 16:9 resolutions

16:9 is the widescreen shape of HD and 4K video, most monitors and TVs, and the YouTube player. These are the sizes it turns up in most often:

NamePixel size
HD (720p)1280 × 720 px
Full HD (1080p)1920 × 1080 px
QHD (1440p)2560 × 1440 px
4K UHD3840 × 2160 px

To get a 16:9 height from a width, multiply by 9 and divide by 16 — a 1600 px wide banner is 900 px tall, because 1600 × 9 ÷ 16 = 900. Going the other way, multiply the height by 16 and divide by 9.

Working in 16:9

  1. Start from the width you have

The ratio fields open on 16 : 9, so type your width into W2 and the height lands on the 16:9 value with nothing else to set up.

  2. Or start from the height

Type into H2 instead and the width recalculates. Whichever field you typed in last stays exactly as you entered it; the other one is the one that moves.

  3. Take a standard size from the list

The common-sizes list carries 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K UHD with a copy button on each row — quicker than typing when you need an exact whole-pixel canvas.

  4. Switch ratios without starting over

The preset chips swap the ratio to 9:16, 4:3, 1:1 and the rest while keeping the size you already typed, so you can see what the same frame becomes in another shape.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1920 × 1080 exactly 16:9?

Yes. 1920 ÷ 16 = 120 and 1080 ÷ 9 = 120, so both sides come from 16:9 scaled by the same number — the ratio is exact, with nothing rounded. 1280 × 720 is the same ratio at 80 per unit, and 3840 × 2160 is 1920 × 1080 with both sides doubled.

What are the standard 16:9 resolutions?

The four in regular use are 1280 × 720 (HD, 720p), 1920 × 1080 (Full HD, 1080p), 2560 × 1440 (QHD, 1440p) and 3840 × 2160 (4K UHD). All four are exact 16:9, so a layout built at one of them scales to the others without any reframing.

How do I find the height when I only know the width in 16:9?

Multiply the width by 9 and divide by 16. A 1440 px wide frame is 810 px tall, and a 2000 px one is 1125 px. Widths that are a multiple of 16 give a whole-number height every time; anything else lands on a fraction that has to be rounded to the nearest pixel.

What size should I export a YouTube video at?

The YouTube player is 16:9, so a 16:9 file fills it edge to edge. 1920 × 1080 is the usual Full HD export and 3840 × 2160 the 4K one; 1280 × 720 still holds up when file size matters more than fine detail. Anything narrower or taller than 16:9 is fitted inside that frame rather than filling it.

What is the difference between 16:9 and 16:10?

16:10 is taller. At the same 1920 px width, 16:9 gives 1080 px of height and 16:10 gives 1200 px — 120 px more. As decimals that is 1.78 against 1.60, which is why a 16:9 video on a 16:10 monitor leaves a thin band at the top and bottom.

Is 4K the same shape as 1080p?

Yes — 3840 × 2160 is 1920 × 1080 with both sides doubled, so both are 16:9 and a design made for one fits the other with nothing cropped. Only the pixel count changes: 4K UHD holds four times as many pixels as Full HD.
