Common 9:16 sizes

9:16 is the full-screen vertical ratio short-form video is cut for. These are the sizes it usually gets exported at:

NamePixel size
HD — Reels/Stories720 × 1280 px
Full HD — Reels/Stories/TikTok1080 × 1920 px
QHD — Reels/Stories1440 × 2560 px

For a 9:16 height, multiply the width by 16 and divide by 9 — a 1080 px wide canvas comes out 1920 px tall. For the width, multiply the height by 9 and divide by 16 instead.

Working in 9:16

  1. The ratio starts at 9 : 16

The page opens with the vertical preset already applied, so you can type a size in without picking a chip first.

  2. Type whichever side you know

Put your width in W2 or your height in H2. The other field recalculates on the spot and keeps the exact 9:16 shape.

  3. Copy a ready-made vertical size

The common-sizes list holds 720 × 1280, 1080 × 1920 and 1440 × 2560, each with its own copy button. For a vertical piece that has to be cut into feed posts afterwards, the Instagram grid guide covers the sizes and the upload order.

  4. Compare it against landscape

Click the 16:9 chip to see what the same width becomes lying down — useful when one piece of footage has to go out in both shapes.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1080 × 1920 a 9:16 size?

Yes, exactly. 1080 ÷ 9 = 120 and 1920 ÷ 16 = 120, so both sides scale from 9:16 by the same number. It is the Full HD vertical frame — the same pixel count as 1920 × 1080, turned on its side.

What size should I export a Reel, Short or TikTok video at?

9:16 fills the screen on all three, and 1080 × 1920 is the usual Full HD export. 720 × 1280 keeps the same shape at a smaller file size, and 1440 × 2560 leaves room to downscale later. Each app also draws its own buttons and captions over the edges of the frame, so keep anything that has to stay readable away from the top and bottom.

How do I turn a 16:9 video into 9:16?

Crop or pad — no amount of scaling turns one into the other. Cropping a 1920 × 1080 frame to 9:16 keeps a vertical slice around 608 px wide (1080 × 9 ÷ 16 = 607.5), so roughly two-thirds of the picture is cut away. Padding keeps the whole frame and fills the space above and below it instead.

What is the difference between 9:16 and 16:9?

They are one ratio with the numbers swapped. 16:9 is 1.78 times as wide as it is tall; 9:16 works out to 0.56, which is the same thing as 1.78 times as tall as it is wide. That is why 1920 × 1080 and 1080 × 1920 hold exactly the same number of pixels.

What are the common 9:16 pixel sizes?

720 × 1280, 1080 × 1920 and 1440 × 2560 — HD, Full HD and QHD stood upright. All three are exact 9:16: divide either side by its ratio number and you get 80, 120 and 160 respectively.

How do I work out the width of a 9:16 canvas from its height?

Multiply the height by 9 and divide by 16. A 1600 px tall canvas is 900 px wide, and a 2160 px one is 1215 px. Heights that are a multiple of 16 land on a whole-number width; the rest need rounding.
